In Bankruptcy.
A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt j estate of N. Nicholson, of Halcombe, was called for the Court House, Feilding, yesterday afternoon, but the only creditor present was Mr 0. J. Bennett. Tbe D.0.A., Mr G. J. Scott, and the debtor were also present. . Debtor, in bis sworn statement, attributed his bankruptcy to being unable to get regular work, and having to go away seeking employment at a great loss of time and expense. He had been down south for the shearing seeson, but owing to tbe great loss of stock through snow "his earnings were practically nothing. His family had been an extra expense to him aud omitting seven months work on the Government line he had had no work. Some of his debts were attributable to having had bush contracts and the weather being bad the whole profit went to pay wages. He was compelled to file his schedule owing to one of his creditors summoning him, and he had no means to meet his bills. On two different occasions he had been laid up in hospitals, once with typhoid fever and on the last occasion from an accident in the bush, being ill for a considerable time and unable to earn anything. The debtor was examined by the D.O.A. and stated that he had never kept any books or diary in his life; he had generally been ou contract work— bushfelling, fencing and road making; emploj-ed hands ; has had as many as 24 employes under him ; never kept a wages book ; paid the wages men by giving them an order on his employer ; knew the number of hours men worked without the aid of books ; borrowed £6 3s from Mr Gattenby, of Wanganui, to tile with ; was now working for wages at 5s a day * bad no offer to make to his creditors. There not being a quorum of creditors present no resolution could be passed and the meeting adjourned.
