Mr J. H. Hankins, president of the Mauawatu Rugby Union, is presenting tbe Union with a challenge shield for competition amongst the senior teams. The Pohangina Football Club opened the season with a scratch match on Saturday last on tbe township reserve. Sides wero picked by J. Johnston (capt.) and A. Adsett (vice-captain), About twenty-five members were present. In the first spell A. Adsett scored two tries, and Johnston got over twice for his side, none of the tries being converted. In tbe second spell tbe game was veryfast, each side doing their utmost' to score, until five minutes of time when' Johnston scored the third try for hw, side.
