Dr Jameson's Trial.
(Per Mail Steamer at Auckland.) (Per Press Association.) Dr Jameson's appearance outside the Police Court was the signal for a wild outburst of cheering, and the crowd pressed upon him. They meant well, but for some time he was iv danger of being killed by kindness. Dr Jameson will be defended by Sir Edward Clarke, Q.C., Sir F. Lockwood, Q.C, Edward G. Carrow, Q.C, Edward Webster, Q.C. and C. F. Gill. The charge brought against bim is based on the Foreigu Enlistment Act of 1870, passed to pro vide for Fenian raids into Canada from the United States. A precedent is fouud iv General Sandoval, and Sir W. C. Call's naval expedition against Venezuela iv 1887. Their vessel, the Justitia, was litted out at Antwerp, aud battled with a Venezuelau fleet. General Sandoval was sentenced to a month's confinement as a first-class prisoner and ordered to pay a fine of £500. It is understood th?t Dr Jameson's defence will be that he was called upon by the Reform Committee to assist in maintaining order at Johannesburg, that the committeee were acting under the Transvaal flag, the Boer officials haviug withdrawn, and that, moreover, the men accompanying him did not fire until they were attacked.
