English Politics.
I (Per Press Association.) London, March 10. The question of the tconstruction of light railways has been referred to the Committee on Trade. The Postmaster-General and Mr Hanbury, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, in reply to questions, both said until tenders were called for a fast Atlantic service they could not indicate to what extent the Imperial Government would be prepared to subsidise such service. Lord Salisbury, replying to the Empire League, said though in accord with Mr Chamberlain's circular to the colonies, asking for returns of foreign trade, he could not renounce the treaties with other nations till there was a definite prospect of increased trade for the Empire. The League should urge the colonies to formulate a definite scheme for closer trade relations. Mr Lowes, M.P. for Haggerton, will visit Australia iv support of the League's proposal.
