TOTALISATOR RACE MEETINGS.

O— — — — Our contemporary tbe Mauawatu Daily Standard complains, with reason, of tbe " undesirable class of people who follow tbe races from town to town to the danger of ihc public." As the multiplication of " totalisator meetings " bas been the immediate cause of the "germination of these disgusting microbes," the only way to do away with tho cvil — to a great extent— is to abolish those race meetings which have been created for aud by the totalisator. They can easily be selected by the dates of their first programmes. It will be seen by a telegram published in another column that^ the Premier has " taken the bidl by the horns " and expressed his intention not to permit the Metropolitan Club to usurp the function of the Government in regard to these licenses, aud as the Government was the responsible body in tbe matter, and uot the el»b, be was not going to allow it. Racing appeared to him to be deteriorating and turning to nothing but gambling— a state of things which the Government must not encourage. He gave a broad hint to the creators of totalisator meetings when he said ho would rather be without thr paltry revenue from the machine than encourage gambling.
