PALMERSTON RACES. The opening day's race 3in connection I with the Manavvatu J.C. Autumn Meeting was held yesterday. The attendance was very good, upwards of 1000 persons being present. A very enjoyable day's j sport was witnessed, tho racing in the ; majority of events resulting in close finishes. Strathbraan secured an easy win in the Handicap, leading from start . to finish, ; altbough Swift made a bold but unsuccessful bid for first place. All the officials worked hard to maintain the popularity of the Club and everyI thing passed off in a most satisfactory manner. The races were got off punctually to time and the officials are to be complimented on the manner in which | they performed their duties, especially the courteous secretary, Mr C. C. Miles. Following are the results : — Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs — King's i Bowman 1, Flying Shot "2, Umalopogaas 18. From a good start, Flying Shot rushed to the front, where he was challenged by Umalopogaas, and halt way : down the straight they were running head and head. Here King's Bowman came with a great run and won by a head, Umslopogaas a neck away third. Time, lmin 19soc. Dividend, .£2 11s. Handicap Hurdles, 2 miles — Glenelg 1, Narrate 2, liangipai 3. Won comfortably by two lengths ; Rangipai being two lengths away third ; Auroa fourth. Time, 3min 5b 2 ssec. Dividend, £9 3s. Hack Hurdles, lij miles— Barman 1, Le Grande 2, Zuccho 3. Barman went to tho front, and was never headed, though tho finish was an exceedingly close one. Over the last, hurdle Barman was just ahead of Lcander and Zaccho, with L.c Grande coruiug fast. Half way down the straight, Leandor was done with, and the whips wore out on Barman, Zaccho and Le Grande, the last named making up a lot of grouud. Zaccho was beaten within 100 yards of the jiost. Le Grande aud Barman fought out a great finish, the latter just getting homo by half a neck. Time, 3min 29 2-usec. Dividend, £i Is. Manawatu Racing Club Handicap, lh miles — Strathbraan 1, Swift 2. The Miser 3. Also rau— Pompom, Rangipnhi, Ngatuere, Three Star, Tireuse. The race needs little description. Strathbraan dashed off with the lead, aud was never headed, winning easily by two icuyths. At tkc cud of half a mile the whips wern ont on the others to get on terms with the leader, hut all to no purpose. Tho. Miser was running second for a mile, and made a game effort to overhaul Strathbraan at the top of the straight, but half way down Swift came again aud secured second place. Time, 2min 39 3-issec. Dividend; £9 18s. Hack Fiat Handicap, 1£ miles — Opai 1, Bonafide 2, Disraeli o. Eight others ran. From a good start, Disraeli led the field, and passing the stand was just iv advance ot Violet, tbe others well bunched. Di.-raeli led along the back and into tho top turu, with Violet two lengths away, about a length in advance of the others. In the straight the field closed, aacl a slashing race home resulted in a win for Opai by half a neck from Bonafide, Disraeli half a length away, third. Time, 2min 16sec. Dividend, .£l4 Bs. Borough Handicap, 1 mile and a distance—Lotion 1, Umslopogaas 2, The Miser 3. Lotion went away with the lead, closely followed by Bloomsbury and Swift, and this order was maintained till the top of the straight, when Umslopogaas ran up, and Swift and Bloomsbury dropped back. A very good race down the straight resulted in Lotion winning by half a length, The Miser three lengths away third. No time was taken Dividend, £2 15s. Maiden Hack Race, 7 furlongs — Bloodstone 1, Blue Mountain 2, Mutual 3. A splendid race. Blue Mountain held a good lead entering the straight, but Bloodstone wore her down and won all out by a length. Time, lmm 85 8-ssec. Dividend, £9 2s.
