The Stock Market.
Messrs Abraham and "Williams report : — Our sales this week, comprised Pabiatua Ram and Ewe Fair Awahuri, Palmerston Annual Ewe Fair, and Colyton. At Awahuri we had a small entry of both sheep and cattle. There was a small attendance and bidding was lifeless except for lambs of good quality. For oar annual Xwe Fair we had an entry of some 12,000 sheep of all classes, a large number of which were Lincolns and Romney ewes of really good quality from the various breeders in the district. There was a large attendance of buyers, and the result showed a growing popularity of this sale as a medium for bringing together breeders and buyers of good ewes. The tone of the sale was a little fiat at first but an improvement was soon noticeable, and competition increased from start to 'finish. In fact many buyers had to go away unsatisfied. Lambs and wethers hung fire, and one large line of wethers being turned out unsold. At Oolyton on Friday we had a large entry of sheep, and a few pens of cattle. The sale was in strong contrast to that of the previous day, but we disposed of nearly all the sheep, and some of the cattle. We had a large entry of dairy cows of fair quality, but these met with no enquiry except for forward springers. We quote as follows : — Ewe Fair — Lincoln ewes, 2-tooth, 6s 6d, 6s 9d, 7s, 7s Bd, 8s 2d, 8s 7d ; 6-tooth 6s, 6a Bd, 7s ; full month, ss, 7s 2d, 7a 6d. Romney Ewes — 2-tooth, 7s 5d to 8s 7d ; mixed ages, 6s 9d, 7s. 7s 6d. Store ewes, 8s to 4s 7d ; culls, Is 6d to 2s 6d. Fat ewes, 6s to 6s 3d ; wethers, 5s lid to 6s Id ; lambs in wool (small), 4s 2(1 ; shorn, 2s to 3s ; well bred Romney ewe lambs, shorn, 4s ; Romney rams, £1 Is. Mr R. E. Beckett, reports : — At my sheep fair yesterday at Marton I had very large entries, over 11,000 sheep being yarded, generally speaking of rather good quality. The attendance was good but the bidding was without spirit, the dry weather and the probable fall in mutton making buyers very careful. Later on the bidding improved, and a good deal of business was done, though for the most part in favour of buyers. Lambs were not much in demand, and ewes over 6-tooth are very difficult to quit. Wethers were well competed for and brought full value. I quote — Fat wethers, 8s to 8s 8d; store wethers, 6s 9d to 7s 3d ; Lincoln-Lei-cester wethers, 7s; Lincoln 2-tooth ewes, 7s 6d to '8s; Romney 2-tooth ewes, 7s to 7s 6d ; breeding ewes, 4s 6d to 6s 3d ; lambs, 3s 3d to 3s 7d ; good woolly lambs, fat, 7s Id ; fat ewes, 5s to 6s.
