AUSTRALIAN CABLES.
(Per Press Association.) Sydney, This Day. It has been raining steadily since Saturday night. Owing to Sir Henry Parkes' recent active participation iu public affairs the Government has no intention of proceeding further with the grant which it was proposed to make him, nor will Ministers support any movement in that direction. Brisbane, This Day. Twelve mines are; inundated by the flood, and work will be stopped for a month or six weeks. The Sugar Journal, in a leading article dealing with the prospects of the sugar growing, says the number of Polynesians employed on the plantations is steadily decreasing. The lesson taught is that men are working for themselves and using the best machinery and displacing colored workers. The labor question being gradually forced into the back ground the industry has in consequence gained in stability.
