A Steamer Destroyed by Fire.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, This Day. A fire broke out early this morning on the steamer Waitapu, on the Patent Slip, and in a very short space of time the steamer was completely gutted. From accounts to hand it appears that the outbreak occurred in the forward part of the vessel, and almost immediately was followed by an explosion, the cause of which is not clear. The Patent Slip Company employes did all that was possible to extinguish the flames, and were energetically assisted by others, including some members of the Wellington Fire Brigade, who went out from town. Later. When it was seen there was no chance of saving the Waitapu she was run down into the water, but by that time almost the whole of the woodwork was burnt. It is believed the explosion was caused by a rocket which was stored in the forward part of the vessel. J. S. iCross, owner, valued the vessel at £1700. She wa*? insured for £750 in the Alliance. Nothing is known of the origin of the fire.
