Our contemporary says : — lt is a loss to the whole colony that the key of the 'southern railways of the North Island is held by a private company, which is beinar 1 made richer aud more powerful daily by the labor and capital and enterprise ot the settlers in the country on both sides of the .coast served by this railway line. Finally, in consideration of all the circumstances, people ha^e hsen constantly Jed to believe that tha Government at the earliest opportunity meant to take over the line, and this indefinite postponement is simply a right-about face. The " plucky conductors " of the line will in any case eeeafc? " substantial fruits from their enterprfca/' but the enterprise of the settlers in Noriii Wellington and Taranaki is entitled to consideration. Whatever the private interest or the company may be, the public interest demands tbat the railway be made national property, without any delay. There is more money in it for the colony than in many of the land" specs" pf the Government,
