A severe shock of earthquake was felt here last night. The Gas Company has declared a dividend of 10 per cent. A laborer named Edward Mars, of Marakaho, aged 30 was drowned while bathing off the Marine parade. Coust Norwood swam to his rescue, but when he was brought ashore Mars was dead. Tbe insurance on the Danevirke mill destroyed by tire yesterday was £500 in the Norwish Union. Danevirke, Jan. 29. The Hawke's Bay Timber Co.'s mill here has been destroyed. A large sum was lately spent on refitting the machinery. The mill was insured bufc the amount is not known here. ; Wellington, Jan. 28. Arrived, 7 p.m.— Tongarira, from London, via way ports. A small steamer, believed to be the Waitapu, is off Wanganui bar flying signals, " Rudder gone and making water." It is understood that the damages were sustained on leaving Patea last night. Wanganui, January 29. An old man named Michael Hanlon, an inmate of the Jubilee Home, attempted to commit; suicide this afternoon by stabbing himself with a pocket knife. With a view of organising tbo whole of the station hands of thia colony, the general secretary of the New Zealand Worker's Union has been instructed to compile a directory containing the various sheep stations from Auckland to the Bluff. At a meeting ofthe Union on Saturday evening resolutions were passed expressing satisfaction that the trade union sheep shears were used by most of the members this season, a record of New Zealand having been established b.y Mr Lundon, an ex-president ot the Union, who shore 3000 sheep with one pair of new shears.
