Strengthening our Defences.

o (Per Press Association.) Wellington, January 28. Government intend to extend the defences in WellingtoL, and decided to immediately construct a battery at the top of the hill overlooking Wellington Terrace, either iv or close to Botanical Gardens. The work is to be carried to completion as speedily as possible. Only one heavy gun is to be mounted. The site is one of which fche Government has power to resume possession for the purposes of public works, primarily for an observatory.
