The Feilding Star, Oboua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published. Daily. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29, 1896. THE FEILDING LIBRARY.

— . • • The ceremony to take place in tfae< Municipal Buildings this afternoon may be said to mark an epoch in the hfcsjfcofjr of Feilding. It is now twenty years sift£3 ,t,^e library was first inaugurated in tfae &U Jnjioigration Barracks. A few reading ;nen joined together, donated books, *n4 scribed for the best and most popular English journals and niaga«in«3. Generous assistance was rendered by tba gentlemen connected with tbe (then) l&injigrants and Colonists' Land and Loktt Qorpo ration 1 , and, a number of valu.aible » T ,<SfV* f^ere sent from England by metabe^ & ibv Pirectory.

After a few years, when the town was | made a borough, with a courage and | enterprise for which the ratepayers of j Feilding deserve the utmost credit, it was determined to make the institution a free one, and the success which followed that generous movement has amply justified the promoters. Although its progress has not been marked by " leaps and bounds," yet it has been steady, at the same time keeping pace with the times in the matter of placing on the shelves of the library all the latest and best books published by standard or modern authors. Mistakes have doubtless been made by the management, but taking the institution from its inception to the present time we claim that its errors of omission or commission have been fewer than those of any other of its kind in the colony, and, other things being equal, that few of its rivals have done so much and made so little fuss about the good work it has accomplished with very limited means at its disposal. We congratulate all connected with the library on the event of to-day, and cordially wish the institution all the success it deserves.
