The Feilding Star, Oboua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published. Daily. SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 1896. HAWKERS.

o It is a matter for surprise that shopkeepers, who are compelled to close their business places on the weekly half-holiday, have been so long silent on the subject of hawkers wbo are permitted to pursue their avocations without interruption. " A Shopskeeper " in the Napier Telegraph has, however, set the ball rolling by drawing attention to his grievance, and, doubtless, more will be heard of itThere can be no objection to hawkers per se, because they have as much right to earn their livelihood as any other people, and may even be considered useful in their way, but the objection is that they interfere with the legitimate rights of regular traders who are heavily burdened with rates, rents, and taxes, from which the hawker escapes entirely. Nominally, they pay a license, but actually not 10 per cent of them do so. There is no check upon them whatever in that respect, which, added to their exemption from the expenses other located •v*cdors have to meet, gives them unfair #.d& r antages, and enables them to undersell iia .overy trading line. We believe if the shopkeepers were to

combine and take joint action they could accomplish the desired end, and have these peripatetic rivals put on a level with them in respect of local taxation. We would suggest that those interested in the towns on this coast appoint delegates to meet at some central place, where they could discuss the subject from all points of view, and arrive at some decision as to the best course to be followed to check a growing evil which is striking at the roots of fair trading. As it is possible the " Hawkers Bill " may be again introduced to Parliament next session, no time should be lost in taking action. The pressure from without of a large number of influential tradesmen would help materially in securing the passing of the measure. flTwrTiT** »i t**-*i**T-'i l ir'''*''*.'T' *""•*'•••■
