The wife of Samuel Gillan, an old settler at Portobello, was found dead by her husband this morning when he went to ask her if she would take a cup of tea. She had bsen taken ill on the previous day after eating heartily of green peas. Death is supposed to be due to natural causes, but an inquest will be held. R. McKenzie, of the Invercargill Cycling Club has lowered Shortland's Dunedin-Invercargill record from 10 hours 50 minutes to 10 hours 8h- minutes. Wanganui, January 24. At a public meeting to-day to consider a scheme to raise funds for the completion of the new Hospital, the sum of £400 odd was raised in the room. One well-known settler heading the list with LIOO. A "Hospital Saturday" is to be held, when subscriptions will be taken up throughout the whole district. Wellington, Jan. 24. In Chambers to-day an order was made by Mr Justice Buckley referring actions for alleged breach of contract brought by Bing, Harris & Co. against the Wairarapa and Manawatu Farmers' Co-operative Associations to arbitration. The arbitrators are Messrs J. Dutbie, M.H.R., and J. Gale and J. C. Martin, S.M., who commenced dealing with one of the cases to-day. Auckland, This Day. The body of Bishop Luck lay in state this evening in St Patrick's Cathedral, and a solemn oirge was chanted. The Cathedral was crowded. Father Gillan pronounced an eloquent panegyric on the deceased Bishop. Bishop Luck by his will has left nothing personally to successors, but everything for the use of he diocese and the Church, A trout has been captured in a Rotorua stream 171 b in weight. It is believed to be an American brown trout. Christchurch, January 23. At the Magistrate's Court D. Crawford was charged that, being a prohibited person, he was found in the Zetland Hotel. J. M. Walker, the licensee, was charged with permitting Crawford to remain in the hotel. The evidence showed that Crawford had gone to the hotel to pay an old account, but was not supplied with liquor. The charge against the licensee was dismissed, but the Magistrate said Crawford had committed a technical breach of the Act, rendering him liable to a penaly of £5, but under the circumstances he would be fined only ls, without costs.
