(Per Press Association"!. New Plymouth, This Day. The interprovincial cricket match, Taranaki v. Nelson, was concluded today in favor of Taranaki by 59 runs. The Petroleum Company pumped 140 gallons of pure oil this morning as a trial, which was most successful. The supply of oil is increasing. Christchurch, January 23. At a large and influentially attended meeting to-day it was resolved to form a branch of the Navy League in Christchurch and to ask the Governor to become patrou. Robert Bryant the youth who was burned on Tuesday by the tent in which he was sleeping at Port Levy catching fire, died at Lyttelton last night. Dunedin, Jan. 23. At the Police Court to-day, A. Palmer, licensee of Wain's hotel, was charged with not giving his barmaid a half-holi-day. The offence was admitted, but it was urged that tlie barmaid had been told to arrange with a barman about the holiday. A fine of ten shillings and costs was imposed. For supplying with liquor a woman under the influence of drink, R. Walsh, licensee of the Albion Hotel, was fined 40s, the license to be endorsed. A Chinaman named Ah Wong was fined 10s and costs for having a false balance, and the scales were ordered to be forfeited. At Tapanui, in the Clutha district, H. Maynard was fined 5s for drawing beer from a cask without first destroying the duty stamp. As the beer had been forfeited, and Maynard was new to the business he escaped with a small fine. Wellington, January 23. A conferencs of delegates from Fire Insurance companies doing business in the Colony with the object of removing anomalies, which have cropped up in tfie application of the new fire insurance tariff, has been arranged to take place at the Government Insurance Buildings, Wellington, on the 30th instant. The Post is informed that it is the intention of the owners of the barque Lothair to sue the New Zealand Government for damages for alleged illegal detention of their vessel. Two medical men have made an inspection of the barque at the request of the Government and they agree with the health offcer and others who have examined the sufferings of the crew that the disease is " beriberi," and ia not infectious. Bat notwithstanding this opinion, they recommend that quarantine conditions should be imposed on tbe ship. The Westport Coal Company bas chartered the barque Coromandel, now on her way from Newcastle to Wellington, to load coal at Westport for Valparaiso for orders. This will be the first vessel despatched from any New Zealand port to South America with a coal cargo. At the Wellineton Gun Club's meeting Mr Chas. Chavannes, of Wanganui, won the chief prize of £100. This Day. Sir Patrick Buckley took his seat for the first time in his judicial capacity this morning, when he presided over a sitting in Chambers.
