The Feilding Star, Oraua & Kiwitea Counteis Gazette. Published Daily. MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 1896. Local and General News.

There will be Mass at St. Bridget's, Feildinjr, on Sunday next at 11 a.m. ; Evening Service at 3 p.m. Additions are made to-day to the entries for Messrs Abraham and Williams' Palmerston sale. There was a heavy gale here yesterday from the North which did a considable amount of damage to the fruit trees. The Syrian hawker nuisance has reach - ed so acute a stage in Sydney that several magistrates refuse to renew their licenses. It is not generally known that at one time Napoleon was a British subject. This was when Corsica was ceded to England. Still another racing club. A club has been formed at Shannon, and it is intended to hold the first meeting on March 17th. We learn from the Standard that the Manawatu and W.C. A. and P. Association has abandoned the idea of holding 1 an Autumn Show. ■ Samuel Mason, a prohibited person, \ was fined £1 and 9s Costs, or 14 days' imprisonment at Wellington for being in the Royal Tiger Hotel Several of the postage stamp designs on exhibition in the South have been lost. The matter has been placed in the bands of the police. It took the Press Association agent —whoever he was —two pages of ■" flimsy " to convey this wonderful news. ... : Mt > J. Harris, land agent, Marton, i wants to leais£i for a term of years, with .pr^itftp^Pflsbbftßingclanse, twoor three * hundred part oh all ploughable

Entries for Messrs Gorton and Son's Awahuri sale are advertised. A little over 4000 bales of wool have already been sent away from tbe Feilding station. We notice that some consignments are for the N.Z.L. and M.A. Company's sales in Napier. Tbe Christchurch Women's Political Association intend to present the Hon. W. P. Reeves and Mrs Reeves with a handsome address and some suitable token of the birth of their son. It is stated in the Sporting Review that Mr E. F. Yuile, the bookmaker, has issued a writ against the Manawatu Racing Club, claiming LSOO damages for illegally removing him from the racecourse. — Standard. It was decided on Friday in Cabinet to appoint Mr A. A. K. Duncan, chief clerk of the Public Trust Office, as deputy to the Superintendent of the Advances to Settlers Office in addition to the position of Deputy Public Trustee. The Rev. J. Carmody, Roman Catholic priest, and six prominent tradesmen of Wolveihampton, were on Wednesday convicted of a technical offence for permitting a lottery at a bazaar, but were ordered to pay costs only. The thinning out of the ranks of the old settlers is still continuing, says the Wanganui Herald, and we have to record tbe death of yet another — Mr Thos. Peapells, of Mosstown, who passed away recently in his 69th year. Mr Alexander Smith, eldest son of Mr James Smith, of the Te Aro House, left Wellington on Friday by tbe Wakatipu en route to London, where he is to spend a couple of years iv one of the large houses completing his commercial education. The wars and rumours of war which have prevailed for some time have had some slight depressing effect on the public mind which has only been alleviated by the use of the Suratura Tea. One main advantage possessed by this as a beverage is its perfect purety, and, at the same time, invigorating powers while the quality never varies. The post office authorities have accepted the name of " Rauinai " as the designation of the post office now known as " Palmers," and formerly as Pohangina, the latter name having been altered on account of tbero being two localities of the same name. Ranmai is about three miles nearer Ashurst than the Pohangina township. Another death caused by the constant inhaling of battery dust has occurred at Waihi, tbe latest victim being Mr Alfred Dance (says the Paeroa correspondent of the Auckland Herald.) This makes the fifth death in the Ohinemuri district from the inhaling of battery dust. This is rather serious, considering the short time the dry crushing has been iv vogue in these parts. The Oroua polo team defeated Feilding on the latter \s ground, on Saturday last by six goals to four. For Feilding Giesen scored two tries and Pickering and Lance one each, while for Oroua Strang scored four and Gower and Robinson one each. Although played in showers of rain the game was very interesting and fast at times. Mrs Gieseu provided afternoon tea for the players and spectators. It is notified that the estates of the undersigned bankrnpts have been closed : — W. Bellve, saddles, Feikliug; J. C. Morey, draper, Feilding; Fred. Keen, shoemaker, Feilding ; J. D. Millard, boardinghouse keeper, Waituna. The New Zealand Times understands that it has been resolved to meet the increased demand for labour during the summer months by reducing the number of men employed on co-operative works. The Minister of Public Works has given instructions to that effect, intimating that the reduction is to effect, first the unmarried men, and then those married men who have been a year employed on co-operative works. Referring to the vacant portfolios the Wellington correspondent of the Auckland Herald writes :— One of the new Ministers must be a North Island man, and it is desirable that he should possess debating power. It is not easy to fix on two men who possess the necessary experience and qualifications. It would make matters easier for Mr Seddon if Sir Westby Percival were returning to the colony now. Careful housewives are now putting by preserves for rainy days when fruit is scarce. It will be of interest to know where to buy preserving jars and pure cane sugar at the lowest prices. Messrs Bramwell Bros, whose advertisement appears in our columns, intimate that they have full stocks and are selling at the lowest prices in the district. They will be glad to furnish quotations and to deliver goods to all parts of the district. The January number of the postal guide contains several important and liberal concessions to tradesmen and the public in the regulations governing commercial papers. Demands for rates and calls, premium renewal notices, receipts bearing the hitherto interdicted words " with thanks," and formal orders for goods are now allowed to pass. The rate is, for town delivery £d, beyond the town Id. Everyone should procure a copy of the puide. A meeting was held in the Cheltenham Hall on Saturday evening last for the purpose of making preliminary arrangements for sports to be held at Cheltenham. Owing to the unpropitious state of the weather only about twenty-five persons attended. Mr W. Evenson was voted to the chair and stated that he had already been promised £10 for the purpose and Mr Bruce had consented to give the use of his ground. The following gentlemen were appointed a committee to work the matter up and canvas for support : — Messrs J. Bruce, F. Pickering, W. Evenseu, C. Fitzherbert, J. G. Oldham, D. Davies, T.
