Wilful and Corrupt Perjury.
(Per Press Association.) Christchuech, This Day. At the S.M. Court on Saturday Mr Beetham gave judgment in the cases against the licensee of the Central Hotel for alleged breach of the Licensing Act. His worship, in the course of his remarks, said there was wilful perjury on one side or the other, and he fully recognised the grave responsibility which rested on him to decide on which side the perjury should be laid. He had not the slightest hesitation in saying he believed the witnesses for tbe prosecution, and disbelieved those for the defence. He then proceeded to review the evidence, remarking, " The result of my decision is that I believe tbe witnesses for the defence have committed wilful and corrupt perjury. It is with deep regret that I feel myself compelled in the exercise of my judicial functions to come to such a decision.'' Defendant was fined i'lo and costs on tbe first and third charges, the license to bear two endorsements. Costs amounted to £7. Counsel for defendant stated that he proposed to appeal on the question of facts.
