Athletic Championship Meeting.

«# ■ [Per Preas Association) Chbistchcbch, Jan. 5. i A lively gale was blowing to-day, and ! the ground was darkened by clouds of dust. At times the competitors, especially in the bicycle races, could only dimly be seen through the haze. Quarter-mile Hurdles, standard 62secs — Martin, New Zealand, 1 ; F. Harley, 2. Roberts, who was favorite, and Masterton also started, but they had not gone far when Martin took a decided lead and in the straight Harley also passed Roberts. At the last hurdle Martin fell and Harley had the race in hand, but he too stumbled and Martin had time to reach the tape first. Roberts also fell and did not finish. Time, 64secs. Low, Thomas, Wood (New Zealand), Wingrove, Townley (Victoria), and Campbell (Queensland), also started. Low, New Zealand's hope, never occupied a prominent place, and when he made his effort could not get nearer than fourth. Twenty-five Mile Bicycle Race, stand, ard 63mins — Petersen, Napier, 1 ; Crow, Dunedin, 2. Jones retired early clean done, and in the 37th lap Kerr, who was j riding well within himself, had to leave as mentioned above. After this the race became a mere farce, Crow and Peterson covering monotonous lap after lap till in the last, when the Napier man shot to the front and won by about 30 yards.
