TOTALISATOR DATS.
* — The Manawatu Daily Times condemns the action of the Minister in interfering with the allotments of " totalisator days " made by the Racing Clubs Conference. Our contemporary says : — lt would appear that the power behind the totalisator is irresistible. By the Gaming Act of last year it was enacted that a large reduction in the number of totalisator licenses issued would be made. With the view of effecting the reductions on as equitable scale as possible, the racing clnbs were invited to agree among themselves as to the best means of complying with the Act. We do not affirm that in all instances those conferences were correct in their recommendations. The question was not in all cases adjusted on its merits. Little intrigues arose, and the clubs with the least influence went to the wall, in some cases quite regardless of the merits or justice of the case. However, it now appears that all the trouble taken by the clubs was so much vanity and vexation of spirit. Thelclubs which suffered by the reductions have in each case managed to obtain the ear of the Minister with the result that no abatement of the evils the Act was designed to meet is to be expected.
