♦■ (Per Press Association). Chhistchurch, Nov. 18. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court commenced to-day. The Grand Jury found trne bills in all eight charges of embezzlement against Leonard Harper. The hearing of the case has been fixed for December 2nd. Wellington, Novr. 18. The lonic, from London, via usual way porte, arrived this morning She brings one of the most valuable consignments of stock received for some time, in the shape of five Jersey cows, one bull, and four calves, purchased by Mr F. Massey, who accompanies them, from Sir Gilbert Greenall, of Cheshire. The shipment is valued at £1000. The charges of murder and concealment of birth against the girl Mary Davis were dismissed. This Day. Arrived— Ship Pleione, 105 day, from Liverpool. Ellison's case was remanded till after the Supreme Court sessions. The Browns were committed for trial on the second charge. Auckland, Nov. 18. The Trades and Labour Council have decided on Mr John Pawcett, President of the Council, as the labor candidate for the general election or a bye election. At the inquest on Hugh Murray, miner, Kuaotunu, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The Jury recommeaded that three men be employed to every second stope. Archbishop Redwood is expected here for the purpose of meeting the bishops and clergymen to appoint a second catholic prelate for the Auckland Diocese. Bishop Luck is in delicate health. The Friendly Societies' Demonstration Sunday was commemorated yesterday in the City Hall. There was a crowded attendance, the Mayor presiding. Mr Connolly, American Consul, gave an address. The collection was proposed to be devoted towards defraying the hospital feea of sick members of Friendly Societies. Wkstport, November 16. Mr Leslie H. Reynolds has arrived here to report on the Westport harbor works, under instructions from the Government. Woodville, This Day. Telegraphic communication has now been established between Woodville and Wellington, via Eketahuna. Napier, Nov. 18. Mr W. H. Swim has been returned unopposed as Mayor for the eleventh year in succession, which constitutes an Australasian record.
