W. Fowles' modal, close to-morrow evening at 9 a.m. The handicapping will be done by Air F. Mackenzie. The Manchester Rifles had a good muster last night and much useful work in tbe physical exercises "was done under the direction of Color- Sergt. Milsoa. Parades for October are now advertised. Hooping cough is prevalent in this district just now. One case is reported where an adult — aged three score years — had an attack much to his snrprise and disgust. He thought he had put away childish things for some little time. One is never too old to learn. Our readers are reminded of the concert to be held in the Assembly Rooms this evening, when we hope to see a large audience. The life of the late Mr Mountfort, of Wanganui, who was recently drowned in tbe Avon at Christchurch, was insured for 11000, divided between the Government and A.M.P. offices. lhe enquiry into the recent flre at Hawera resulted in a verdict that the fire originated in or near a window in Smith's drapery shop, and the evidence is not sufficiently clear to show how it originated. The Stock Department are advised by the Veterinary Surgeon who is investigating the case first alleged to be anthrax on a farm at Waharoa, Waikato, that he has satisfied himself it is not a case of anthrax. The thoroughbred stallion Bay King is advertised to-day to travel tho Feilding and Marton districts during the coming season. He is well known to be a splendid stamp of horse and breeders desirous of securing a good class of hacks could not do wrong by getting a strain of the aristocratic Cadogau blood through Bay King. We have to acknowledge receipt from tbe author, of copies of the reports of Mr J. E. Marsh on a " Nautical school-ship or training ship for boys in New Zealand," and on the " Settlement of the people on the land in the colonies of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia." We are pleased to note from the Post and Telegraph officers classification list just to hand that the Feilding office, by reason of its increased business, has been selected from twenty-two second grade offices for promotion to tho first grade, thus placing it in the same position as Masterton, Palmerston North, and Carter ton. Mr J. H. Stevens is therefore now a postmaster in the first grade. Attention is drawn to the Masquerade Carnival which is to be held at the Excelsior Skatin? Rink on Wednesday next October 2nd. From the fact of its novelty alone, the Masquerade should prove to be a great success, this being the first skating carnival of the kind ever held in Feilding. Besides the prizes to be offered for different styles of costumes to be worn there is an additional attraction in the Grand March on skates, which will be performed by a number of elegantly costumed lady and gentlemen rinkists. To those desirous of spending a pleasant evening an exceptionally strong inducement is offered, in the attractive form of entertainment to be provided on this occasion.
