Settling People on the Land.
A SUCCESSFUL SCHEME. (Per Press Association.) Adelaide, This Day. In the Assembly the Minister of Lands stated the village settlements had cost the Government £23,000, and their value was assessed at £35,700, while the villagers' assets totalled £41,000. They comprised 5600 acres of cleared land, over a thousand head of stock distributed amongst 1748 settlers, of whom 11 were unmarried women and 984 children. He was fully satisfied and intensely gratified with the results. The success of these settlements proved the value of co-operation, and greatly relieved the labor market. A number had been expelled for laziness and other causes, but a lot of good settlers had been secured. Careful observation has proved it was, m the best interests of settlement not to give women the management as they were not competent to form an opinion upon the practical work of settlers.
