Live Cattle Trade.
EXPERIMENTAL STAGE PASSED. (Per Press Association). London, Sept. 11. The Southern Cross has arrived at Gravesentl. She lost altogether fifty-two bullocks, eighty- two sheep, and one horse. The rest arc in good condition. The fodder on board was sufh'cient for the passage. The mortality of tho voyage was due to exposure atid heavy weather in the vicinity of Cape Horn, and to over-crowd-ing. Only three of the bullocks located on the upper deck died. September 12. About 70 per cent of the Southern Cross' cattle arrived iv good condition, tho remainder poor, aud some regard the shipment as a loss. Experts believe that the mortality is largely due to the rough handling in Sydney, and advise that greater care be exercised in shipping the beasts. Eight of Bergyl's cattle by the Southern Cross, one of Dogan'a, and three of Loader's died. The mortality was greatest among Durharns. The Herefords did fairly well, and the Devons admirably. The horses fared well, and will be turned out to grass at Thames Haven. The Times, discussing the shipping of live cattle, considers the experimental stage has been satisfactorily passed, and that the trade has formally beguu.
