In order to put travellers on land on the same level with those who go down to the sea in ships, it lias been suggested that "Fire drill" should be held in every hotel in the colony at certain intervals. The idea is worthy of consideration. W T e are sorry to have to announce the death of Margaret Jessie, a daughter of Mr and Mrs W. G. Haybittle, which took place j'esterday after a long illness. We sympathise with the parents and relations who have been unsparing in their kind attention to the little one, in their bereavement. With reference to the re-erection of the Manawatu Gorge bridge, Mr Couway at Saturday's meeting of the Manchester Road Board, suggested that a meeting of ratepayers should be held at Ashurst with a view to pushing on the work. The chairman (Mr Lethbridge) agreed to the suggestion and said he understood from Mr Piraui, M.H.R., that the Government would grant a subsidy of £ for £ towards its erection. It was ultimately arranged to hold a meeting of ratepayers at Ashurst on Monday, September 16th. As to the proposed bridge atHokowhitu, Mr Bray, senr., said that he had laid off a road from the proposed site to Fitzherbert at an estimated cost of 11400. Now that a good road could be made on the other side of the river some of the settlers interested would probably support the construction of the road in preference to the bridge. Another of the founders of the colony has died. The Hon Walter D. D. Mantell, M.L.C., expired at his residence, Wellington, on Saturday night aged 75 years. Mr Mantell left England in 1839 iD company with Mr Molesworth and many others who took a prominent part in the early history of the colony, and arrived here in 1840. He founded the settlement of Wanganui for the New Zealand Land Company and was a commissioner appointed in 1848 to settle Native titles in the South Island. Mr Mantell, too, was in Otago in the early days. Deceased was Minister of Native Affairs in the Fox Ministry of 1861 and also in the Weld Ministry in 1874. He had attended at his place iv the Upper House almost every day this session, and his somewhat sudden demise was due to failure of the heart's action.
