The Advance of Science.
There is overy reason to believe that before many years are over the telautog raph will be in as general use as the telephone The Chicaao Times -Herald reproduces a number of autograph letters sent to it, by means of the new method ot transmitting message?, from Cleveland, a distance of 431 miles. They are very clear and are said to be exact fac similes of the original messages. The machine used was the invention of Professor Elisha Gray. It is the result of many years of labour, tnd is believed to have reached the point of perfection No operator is required. The sender ot message writes on the transmitter with an ordinary pen or pencil which is con* nected with the machine by means of two rods of steel. As he writes or araws every letter and curve and line is insUn* tanrously reproduced at the other end of the wire by a pen which works automat ically and duplicates the original message with a faithfulness which nothin? can exceed. By this ingenious instrument it will be possible for a war artist to telegraph a sketch from the battlefield. Indeed there is no limit to the possibilities which this invention opens up to the imagination.
