HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
The House was occupied with private members Bills, the following passing:— Auckland Harbour Board, Exchange of Land, Hawksbury Visting, Otago Dock, Puriri Reserves, Wellington Suburbs Water Supply, Threshing Machine Owners, Waimate Reserves, Criminal Code Amendment (Chemis case), Unclaimed Monies, and Coal Mines Amendment. Mr Pirani's Counties Act Amendment Bill passed through Committee without auy difficulty. The Hon. Mr McCullough takes charge of it in the Upper House. The Defamation Bill was committed. The Hon. J. G.Ward said he objected to the Bill from the beginning to the cud, as it would give an opportunity to unscrupulous journalists to attack public men. Sir Robert Stout defended the Bill at some length. After a very long discussion, during which Messrs McKenzie and Scddou spoke against the Bill, the motion by Mr Ward, that the chairman do leave the chair, was carried by o2 to 20, the Bill thus being killed.
