IPEB PEKBB ASSOCIATION.! Inveucabgili., July 23. Ellen Tonar, aged 61, wife of a laborer at Rivcrton, committed suicide this morning, by throwing herself into the river. Christchuuch, July 23. At a meeting of settlers on land recently flooded by Lake Ellesmere, it was resolved to take steps to constitute a dramage district and take the work of dealing with the lake out of the hands of the Selwyn County Council. It was decided to ask Government to appoint engineers to make a survey of the beach with a view of making a permanent opening from the lake to the sea. Wellington. July 22. The Minister of Lands informed a deputation this morning that the Fair Bents Bill would be introduced at an early date, and he would use every effort to pass it into law. The Government intends to give a subsidy on the Vancouver route, and reduce the subsidy on the San Francisco route, but by way of compensation for reduction the 'Frisco contract will be extended to five years. Gold and silver bullion to the extent of Jj36,000 came from Auckland by the Tnkapuna to-day, and will be transhipped to London by the lonic. Pylades from Auckland. Auckland, July 23, Arrangements have been completed by a Southern firm to take over the Auckland Fibre Company's Works, Mechanics' Bay. Messrs Passmore and Fletcher are now here completing details of the purchase. At a meeting of the Crown Lands Board a letter was received from the Sur-veyor-General informing the Board that when rents on Crown lands are more than two years overdue, steps should be taken to forfeit the seotions. Bents amounting to £3496 are due in tne Auckland district, and the Board resolved to act upon the suggestion.
