He had tied a rope round his neck, and jumped off a small stool, heing evidently strangled. Dunedin, This Day. Jas. Keating, caretaker of the waterworks at Arrowtown, was found dead on Saturday. It is supposed he fell into the water race. Chbistchuhch, July 13. Lake Ellestuere has been freely running out to sea during the last two days, and as the weather is calm there is every prospect of the level being much reduced and relief afforded the unfortunate lake flat settlers whose land has been under water for some time. The barque Gannymede, from Newcastle, about whose safety there was some anxiety, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday after a voyage of 42 days. With the exception of the loss of some canvas, she sustained no injury in the recent severe weather. On many accasions she was within a few miles of port only to be blown away by a succession of southerly gales. This Day. Obituary — Hon. Ernest Gray, aged 63. He had retired from public life for some time. Auckland, July 13 The residence of R Maxwell, baker, Pukekohe, was burned down early this morning. The effects were insured for £200 in the National. A Pukekohe settler was fined with costs amounting to £5 6a for having affixed a previously used scamp to a letter. In responce to an appeal of Justice McCarty, M.P., the Auckland branch of the Irish National Federation forwarded by the outgoing 'Frisco mail, through Mr John Dillon, M.P., 20 guineas for the Irish Parliamentary fund. Messrs Welstead, Chairman of the Waihi grand junction syndicate in London, and E. H. Byles, mining expert, reporting on the Thames goldfields for English capitalists, were passengers by the Mariposo for 'Friaco. A lad named Frederick Lawrence Doolan has been killed in a trap accident. Timaru. July 13. At a meeting addressed by Mr M. C. Orbell, of Geradine, with reference to his scheme dealing with the frozen meat trade, it was resolved to ask the Minister for Agriculture to convene a conference to discuss the position of the trade. Gisborne, July 13. J. W. Mackrell, charged with failing to keep proper books, has been admitted to probation for three months, and ordered to pay costs, £5 15s 6d.
