THE KIWITEA BRIDGE.

<• Tue action of the Borough Council in postponing the erection of the bridge over the Kiwitea stream on the Kirn bolton road is certain to be commended not only by the settlers in the inamediate vicinity but by those who are interested as ratepayers in the other localities which have to contribute. That the recent floods have made a very considerable alteration in the proposed site since the Commissioner sat and adjusted the proportions to be paid by the several local bodies, is undisputed, an.i the Borough Council have acted with commendable prudence and forethought in asking Gov ernment to send a qualified Engineer to make a report before expendingmoney on a structure which may be washed away owing to the loose and unstable character of the foundation. It must be understood that we do not in the slightest degree undervalue our local engineering talent, but the fact is well known that as a rule people have much faith in what is called " distant talent," and in the case now before us there can exist no reason why they should not be indulged. We may say, however, that the delay in making a start on the bridge (however unavoidable) is interfering very seriously with the business transactions of the local storekeepers, and, if on their account alone, the greater the alacrity shown in getting and adopting an expert's report, and in putting up the bridge, the better it will be for the burgesses of the Borough as a whole and for those settlers who are compelled to draw their supplies from Feilding by way of the Kimbolton road.
