The final sale at " The Little Shop " in Fcrgussou street will bo held on Saturday next. The plain and fancy dress ball to bo held at Colyton on Friday evening next, will, no doubt, be largely attended. It is almost settled that a strong effort will be made to re-establish the Feilding Horticultural Spring and Autumn shows. Owing to the bad state of the roads tlic "Waituna sale of Messrs Gorton and. We (Standard) regret to record the death of Mr J. J. Leigh, one of Palmerston's oldest residents, at the. age of 76. Mr Leigh sustained a shock to his system a few days ago, besides having two of "his ribs broken, through being overturned by a dog in the Square, and the accident telling severely upon a man of his age, he never recovered from it, passing away last night at his residence in Amcßbury street. He was highly respected throughout the district and had many sterling qualities. -

We (New Zealand Times) have ascertained on enquiry that the Government have jnst ordered from the Imperial War Office 3000 Martini-Henri rides and carbines. When these arrive, as they may h<? expected to do within the next three or four months, the whole of the defence forces will be armed with the MartiniHenri. The Bank of England employs about 1109 men, and has a salary list, including pensions, of about i.'000,009 per annum. The Governors and directors of the bank divide between them A' 14,000 per annum. Of this the Governors receive £"1000 each, and tho directors LSOOO each. According to the report of Mr Wilson Fox, an assistant to the Royal Commission of Agriculture, the "splendid agricultural county of Lincoln; has since 1879 been staggering under a succession of blows from which many predict it can never recover. The capital lost during the last two decades has been enormous the value of the wheat and barley crop alone having shrunk by nearly three and a half millions sterling.
