Messrs Nelson Bros., give the following market quotations on April 19th for mutton : — English mutton— Wethers, 6 : }-d to 6t}d; ewes, 4M to sd; New Zealandbest, 3|fd to 3j>d ; Australian, 2£d to 2\A ; Enphsh beef, sf£d to 6d : American beef, 6£d to 6;] d : N.Z. and Australian beefhinds, 3d to 4J ; fores, 3-J-d to 3 r }d. The firm report, with regard to New Zealand mutton, that the stocks are so abnormally large, and persistent forced sales for weeks past, have failed to appreciably reduce the plethora, that each arrival adds to the gravity of the situation, and makes the future of the trade less hopeful. Prices during the month have shown little fluctuation, about 2id per lb generally running for North Island sheep, sales have been made at 2;jd per lb, and occasionally 2j}d per lb hns been obtained. Dunedins are selling at 2#d to 2*d per lb, Canter - burys from 3sd to 3sd per lb a few prime, to special customers who require the best have made 3jid per lb.
