THE GOVERNMENT AGAIN DEFEATED. [Per Press Association.] Sydney, Ap.iil 30. i In committee in the Legislative Assembly on the Local Government Bill, Mr Watson, labor member, moved an amendnient, which was carried agaiust the Government last week, asserting the principle of one-man-one-vote in municipal elections. The Premier, who was not satisfied with last week's defeat, said the ; Government had decided to make the question a party one, and would abide by the decision if the House accepted Mr Watson's present amendment. On a division being taken the Opposition joiued issue with the Labor Party, the resuit being the defeat of the Government by 47 votes to 42. The Opposition members explained that their action was taken with a view to kill the Bill. Premier Reid, in order that the Bill might be dropped, then moved that the chairman leave the chair. Mr O'Sullivan moved an amendment that leave be given to sit a»ain. The debate is proceeding. This Day. In the Assembly Mr O'tiullivan's amendment was negatived on the voices, and the House adjourned The Premier, who was interviewed on the position, expressed Ins indignation at the Opposition yoting for the amendment, though a majority of them were averse to it, simply to embarrass the Government.
