Concert at Sandon.
A concert, in aid of the Carupbelltown Church of England was held in the Sandon Town Hall last evening, the building being packed. Prior to the commencement of the concert the Rev. J. D. Russell expressed Ms pleasure at seeing such a large attendance and in mentioning the objects for which it waa promoted said it was their desire to raise £200 before the building was commenced. They had collected £175 within one month and the erection would be pushed on as soon as they had the required amount. He mentioned the names of Mrs Davis and Miss Costall as having rendered valuable assistance in getting up the concert and he expressed his thanks to them. The Sandon Brass Band, under the conductorship of Mr Williams, played several selections outside the Hall and also the opening piece. The several performers who were chiefly from Palmerston and Feilding were well received by the audience, who were not slow to recognise that a really first-class programme had been provided. The Rev. Innes Jones favored the audience with the songs " Good-bye sweetheart " in #lhe first part and " Holy City " in the second part of the programme; Miss Begg sang " Blind girl to her harp " ; Mr F. W. Treseder supplied the comic element and was encored for " Do, do, My Huckleberry, do," giving in response 11 Bignells medley," and in the second part the song " Wot cher " was also encored, Mr Treseder replying with " Dear me, is that possible " fairly bringing the house down and he had to reply to a double encore with " Get yer •air cut." ; Mr Percival received an encore for the violin solo "Mazurka de concert " and his second item " Airs from Mozart " was also well received ; Mrs Prior sang " London bridge " and " Twickenham Ferry " both of which were given in a free and pleasing manner ; Mr Permain displayed a good voice in the songs " Queen of the earth " and " Out on the deep " ; Miss Cherrett's rendition of " Home, deary, home " and •' La Serenata " (with violin obligato by Mr Percival) provided two really good items ; Mr McKinnon sang " Plymouth sound " and " Dearer than life " ; Miss Bethune (of Wellington), excited considerable applause for her happy rendition of " Barney O'Hare," repeating a verse as an encore ; Mr Opie sang " Anchored " and " Vanity " ; Mr F. G. Woollams gave two flute solos, each of which was loudly applauded ; a pianoforte and violin duet was given by Miss Cherrett and Mr Percival. " God save the Queen " brought a most enjoyable concert to a close. The accompaniments were played by Miss Anderson, Miss Cherrett, Miss Hammond, Mr Moore and Mr McKinnon. The financial result of the concert will be a substantial addition to the church building fund.
