The Investors' Review says that reports from Auckland complain bitter^' of the Bank of New Zealaud grasping the entire business of the colony and killing private enterprise. In the Tasker case the judge entered up judgment in accordance with the finding of the jury. In the discussion on Sir William McGregor's paper Lord Knutsford praised the action of the colonies with regard to New Guinea and agreed it would be unwise to deport the natives. Bir J. F. Garrick said it was impossible to expect the colonies to continue to finance New Guinea for philanthropic purposes. Earl Stanmore hoped the Colonial office would not interfere with the colonies. The Court has decided that a strong prima Jacie case has been made out , against the accused in the Liberator cases. About 100 Arabs have been arrested and brought to Cairo for pillaging the steamer Yarrowdale, which wis stranded in the Red Sea. The ves^pl is completely stripped of all her cargo and fittings. Paris, March 1. During the debate in the Chamber of Deputies on Colonial affairs, M. De Loncle urged that the Government should obtain compensation from Great Britain in return for discontinuing the transporta* tion of convicts to New Caledonia. Berlin, March 1. The naval programme for the year in eludes the construction of two ironclads, one first class and seven second class cruisers. The Committee of the Reichstag rejected a proposal emanating from the Clergy to impose long terms of imprisonment on those who attacked belief in God, the immortality of the soul, and the religious character of the marriage ceremony. The Clergy assert that Herr Rintelin, leader of the modern science movement, is poisoning society with his doctrines.
