Mr Pirani, M.H.8., was present at the cycling sports yesterday. After the parade of the Manchester Rifles this evening a meeting of the Shooting Committee will be held at MiLight's Denbigh Hotel. Mr E. Ellery Gilbert, pianoforte tuner, etc., will visit Feilding on the 26th inst., and remain in the district for some weeks. We have received from the Agricultural Department the following leaflets for farmers :—' The Giaut Burdock,' 'Hessian Fly, 1 ' Leather Jacket,' 'Potato Moth,' ' Stoat or Weasel.' The champion horse dealer has been found at Mastertou. Having sold a horse he demanded the right to remove , the animal's shoes, as they were not in- : eluded in the bargaiu. The meeting of the Feilding Athletic Sports Committee, called for to-morrow evening, has been postponed till Monday I evening next, owing to harvest thanksgiving services being held in St. John's Church. At the conclusion of the Fire Brigade practice on Monday evening next a meeting will be held for the purpose of electing a delegate to represent the Brigade at the conference to be held at Hokitika. The Hon. J. McKenzie addressed a largely attended meeting at Dunedin last night. A vote of thanks and confidence in the Minister and Government was carried. Mr Fish was in the chair. The recent hurricane at Fiji has played sad havoc with the banana and other fruit crops, consequently the cargoes brought away by vessels to New Zealand and Australia are of barely half the usual volume. | A party of Palmerston residents proceeding to the Feilding sports yesterday (says the Standard) met with a mishap at Awahuri. The horse objected to pro- ( ceed further, and when a volunteer ' driver injudiciously applied a persuader, the horse smashed the shaft and one of the wheels. We have been shown a fine sample of the " Gravenstein " apple, grown on a ! tree which will be five years old next winter, from the orchard of Mr L. J. Darling, nurseryman, of Pohangina. These are au early variety and as an eating apple are second to none. The polling for a loan of £7328 for the Pohaugina Riding, will take place on Saturday, 2nd March, at the Council Office, Pohangina, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is important that all who wish to see the place go ahead should vote in favor of this loan. It is with feelings of regret that we publish to-day the death of Mrs Alfred Paine, of Cheltenham, who expired at the residence of her husband this morning after a short illness. The funeral will leave her late residence on Saturday afternoon for the Kiwitea Cenieteiy. Mr H. Lethbridge's Wangaehu station was the scene of a smart bit of shearing a few days ago, when, in Si hours, a party of seven men disposed of 1100 sheep. The best "hands "on the occasion were Noah Garner and the redoubtable Teke, who tied with 76 each. — Chronicle. Seeing the splendid crops of fruit' vegetables, and beautiful flowers of all kinds and descriptions grown in this district, it is a great pity that the question of holding horticultural shows in the spring and autumn is not opened up again. In past years the Feilding shows compared favorably with any others in the colony. A great deal of interest is being manifested in the coming wrestling match on Saturday evening next. Mr Sutherland has thrown all the best men in this and the other island, in the GraecoRoman and Catcb-as-catch-can styles, and besides -winning here at the Sports, carried everything before him at Napier. It remains to be proved of what material j the local competitor is made of. At the meeting of tha committee of the Mawawatu Racing Club last evening a letter was read from Mr P. J. Murtagh, of Feilding, asking permission to exhibit his starting machine at the autumn meeting. It was decided to allow Mr Murfcagh to have a trial on the course prior to the races, and, if satisfactory, permission to be given Mr Murtagh to use the machine at the meeting. — Standard. The following Wanganui candidates have passed the teachers' examinations : -Class D. — William Curry, Annie Goodland, Frederick Hankin, Thomas Insoll, Albert Powell, Joanna Prender<*ast and Mary Sicley. Class A— Dr William Muir (partial pass). Partial passes Class E — Annie Beaven, Arthur Buchler, George Clapham, Claude Holden, Percy Jackson, Marion McDonagh, Eliza McEwen, Peter Matheson, George Purnell, Amelia Reed, Mary Shortall, Eleanor Watts and Josephine Kay. Harvest thanksgiving services will be held in the Birmingham Wesleyan Church next Sunday. Three services will be held— ll a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. Special singing will be rendered during the day. In consequence of the above the evening service at Kiwitea will be dispensed with. 1 hear that the Trustees of the Church intend holding a monster tea and concert on the 18th March. Mr Richards is to leave for Nelson on Tuesday next to attend the Wesleyan Conference. — Birmingham correspondent. * j The Young People's Christian En- ! deavor Society of Feilding held a most successful anniversary gathering in the Wesleyan Church last evening, -when visitors were present from Bulls, Sandon, Campbelltown and Turakina. Addresses were given by the Rev. Mr Dawson, Messrs Downes, Ellman and Penny (of Bulls) and Mrs Ross (Turakina), who dealt with the different branches of Christian endeavor work. A recitation was given by Mr Manson, junr., and Mr J. Sanson sang two solos. A quartette by members of the Balls Society was pleasingly rendered. Refreshments were handed round, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The proposal to hold a service by the combined Anglican choirs of Wanganui, Patea, fcCapton, Feilding and Palmeraton, has now assumed definite form, and it has been arranged that the gathering will be held at Wanganui shortly aftej? Easter. It is expected that fully 120 voices will take part. The service has had to be postponed owing to the fact of the organ at the "Wauganui Church being under renovation, Tours' beautiful evening service will be used, and the anthem will be " The Radient Morn." L.asfc Friday even ing Mr H. Brooke, the choirmaster at Wanganui, attended tbe practice of All Saint's choir, and expressed himself aa being very pleased with the progress the members had made under Mr Drew with the music. On Sunday next fliere will be Mass in St. Bridget's at 8 and 11 o'clock. Evening service at 3 p.m. During the last few days when the heat has been phenomenal, ice has been dispensed at Mrs Hastie's Feilding Hotel. Au unoccupied 4-roomed house at Halcombe was burned down on Tuesday night. It is believed the building was insured.
