The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. THURSDAY FEB. 7, 1895. FEILDING S.M. COURT.
A second Stipendiary Magistrate was added to this district in order to over take the large increase of work, but. j so far as Feilding is concerned the change has been far from beneficial. Indeed, we may Bay our local litigants have reason to complain of the treat ment they have been, and are, receiving. At the last S.M. Court day, owing to some misunderstanding be wen Mr Brabant and Mr Stanford, neither of these gentleman put in an appearance, for one expected the other to be here, and vice versa, so such f cases as were within their jurisdiction h.id to be taken by the Local Justices i the Peace, and the others adjourned r until to morrow. A large number of litigants aod their witnesses, who had come from losg distances in the " country were disappointed and put to additional expense. We are informed now that the same thing will be repeated to-morrow, for Mr Stanford has been appointed ,t>o .take tl^s place of Mr Martin, in Wellington, who in Smb tatfii has t.o preside over th.c District ■. Court at Palmerston North, in place * of Che District Judgp, Mr Kettle, 1 who is absent on sick leave. We * muwt certainly enter our protest against 1 Feilding being treated in this manner 1 because it is manifestly unjust that important cases, probably involving serious issues, should be left undeci- -', ded for two consecutive Court days I Siiraly 'd it was necessary to leave out 3 one of the B. M- .Court days in the circuit it should noi have jbegij pne allotted to Feilding, where litigaute * iiaye a& much right to consideration as $pge~oi oth,pr places, lii© ftgt is we
lave in the past so tamely submitted ;o all kinds of neglect, especially * irhere matters connected with the S.M. Dourt are concerned, that Feilding *ets but scant consideration, and the * xmvenience of the public is not likely to be consulted when they are so remarkably slow to take up the \ audgels on their own behalf. It must * be understood we are not findtng fault j with either Mr Brabant or Sir Stan- , ford, for they have no discretion in the matter ; but with those in authority, who shouhl have appointed , an extra Stipendiary Magistrate to perform the work formerly done by Mr Kettle, who is now on sick leave. We hope at the meeting of the Borough Council this evening the grievance now complained or will be brought up and ventilated with a view of preventing a recurrence of ike same. _^__^__^_»««»
