Prosecutions for Betting.
Mklbourne, January 18. A considerable sensation has beon occasioned by the prosecution of a number of bookmakers for betting on a racecourse and elsewhere, contrary to the provisions of the amended Police Act. William Henry Boardman, who made a bet on a course with a plain-clothed constable, was lined the minimum penalty of 4s, and was further fined Is for issuing a card invitiug subscriptions on a race. A prosecution against two bookmakers for betting in their own establishments broke down. Mr Leek, who defended in one of the cases, made some caustic comments on the fact that high officers, including the Premier, the At-torney-General, the Postmaster General, and several members of the Legislative Council, were alleged to have made bets, but had been allowed to go free. He also pointed out the fact that the Legislature, though desiring to make the totalisator the sole menus of botting, had made all bets on the machine illegal. Mr Cowan, P.M., was also severe upon the authorities in his remarks. — Post.
