Chess Tournament.
[PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Wellington, January 4. Shortly after the resumption of play this afternoon Mackay won a further exchange against Edwards, and a few moves later queened a pawn and won. Lelievre won from Gifford. The game Cocks v Hookham was drawn. Barraud won from Pleasants owing to a premature move on the part of the latter, who had an undoubted win. Wood and Hookham decided to start their game to-night. The opening was the king's knights, and Hookham has the advantage in position and all the attack. The leading scores are as follows : — Cocks, won lh lost 3£ ; Mackay, won 7 lost 3 ; Barnes, won 6 lost 3 ; Lelievre, won 6 lost 3 ; Edwards, won 5 lost 4 ; Gifford, won 5£ lost 3£ ; Hookham, won 4 lost 4 ; Pleasants, won 4 lost 5. Cocks' games are all finished. Barnes has to meet Edwards and Gifford, Mackay has to meek Lelievre, Edwards has to meet Barnes and Wood, and Hookham has to meet Barraud. It is expected the championship will be decided on Monday morning.
