The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. SATURDAY, DEC. 29. 1894 THE BOROUGH ELECTION.

* A vory sensible suggestion is made in our correspondence column by " Fair Play " to the effect that the Makino portion of the Borough should be represented in the Council by a local man. Of course it is generally understood that each Councillor represents the whole Borough in his place at the Council table, if only for the reason that the Borough is not divided into wards, and we hope it never will he ; but Councillors are only human, and are apt sometimes to give more attention to the requirements of that part of the town which coraes daily under their observation than to the outlying portions which they may never see at all during tbe whole of their term of office. Whether the Makino people bave anything to complain of in this respect or not we are not prepared to say, because they have in the past been silent on the subject, but at any rate they can only do good by putting forward a candidate for election in whum they have confidence aud who is likely to have a share of the support of the rest of tho burgesses. We do not agree with our correspondent that a candidate who has hitherto taken no part in Borough affairs should be elected without op position, on auy grounds whatever. The ratepayers have an indisputable right to know something of the views and opinions of those who aspire to a seat in the Council, especially at a time like the present when very important proposals in the direction of improvements to the town are likely to be brought forward for consideration. We do not doubt for a moment that if the burgess named by our correspondent does come forward he will follow the lines we bave indicated and give a puhlic expression of his views on Borough matters and will stand a fair chance of election because we know him to be held in high esteem by everyone who has come in contact with him since his arrival in the dis trict. There is also a desire on the part of the electors to not only give " fair play " to each other, but to infuse new blood into the Council. We may bere state that the name of no otber possible candidate for the vac* ancy has yet been reported.
