FEILDING JOCKEY CLUB SPRING MEETING. FIRST DAY. Stewards : Messrs J. Saunders, H. Bastings, B. Gosling, W. A. L. Bailey, W. A. Sandilauds, H. L. Sherwill, E. Jackmau. Judge: W. H. Hartgill. As intimated in our yesterday's issue the first day's racing of the Feilding Jockey Club's Spring Meetiug waa held yesterday. The weather in the morning was threatening and about the middle of the afternoon a drizzling rain began to fall, continuing for the remainder of the day Everything passed off smoothly without protests, although Ross, rider of Princess Cole in the Hack Flat was cautioned by the stewards for disobedience at the post Mr E Woods' starting was, as usual, very good, especially in the Kiwitea Stakes, when he was applauded by the spectator? for the manner in which he got the field away. Only in the St. Andrews Handicap and the Kiwitea Stakes did the favorite win, which speaks well for Mr Henry's handicapping. However, there were no very close finishes. The most popular win of the day was Mr C. FitzHerbert's with Kalinia, in the Kiwitfla Stakes, and Jenkins mount was loudly cheered as she galloped down the straight leading the field. C. Jenkins rode four winner?. The attendance in the afternoon was very good considering the weather, about 1500 people being present, including a number of ladies. The amount passed through the totalisator yesterday was £458 in excess of the firßt day last year, nntnely, £3147, the previous year being £2689. The following events were ran after we went to press yesterday : — St Andrews Handicap, of 200 soys. ; sec ond horße to receive 25 soys., third horse 5 soys. from the stakes ; one mile and a half. Mr A. Portland's Golden Plover, Bst 101 b (W. Whittaker) 1 Mr G. Hunter's Planet, 6st 81b (Fairbrother) 2 Mr R. Kingan's Musket, Bst 81b (F. Kingan) 3 Also started — Monte Carlo, St. Laura, Lebel, Porapotu, Senator, Pihanga. From a good start Lebel and Planet's colors showed in front Coming into the straight Senator moved up and led past the stand for the first time, with the others in a bunch. At the back of the course Golden Plover improved his position and led into the straight, all the whips were now freely used and Kingan made a big attempt to move Musket in front, but without avail as the winner secured the judge's verdict by a short length, the remainder of the field being well up. Totalisator £'948, on the winner £136. Dividend, £4 ss. Time, 2min 42 2-ssec First Handicap Hack Flat, of 30 soys., second horse to receive 5 soys. from tno stakes ; one mile and a quarter. Mr A. Camerou's Gunboat, 7st, (C. Jenkins) 1 Mr W. Huuia's Huia, 7st 121 b (W. Neavy) 2 Mr R. Ross' Princess Cole, 7st 51b (owner) 3 Also started— The Friar, Sylvanus, Natatorial, Tuhiwai, Vagrant, Bouquet, and Allington. From au exceedingly good start Ayres assumed the lead with Bouquet aud led past tho stand, followed by Sylvauus, Vagrant, and Gunboat. At the back of the course Princess Colo increased her pace and promised her backers a win, but after a struggle with Gunboat and Huia she fell away beaten. Gunboat won easily by about three lengths, Princess Cole the same distance away from Huia. Totalisator, £429 ; on the winner, £87. Dividend, £4 Bs. Time, 2min. 15 2-ssec. Kiwitea Stakes, of 50 soys., second horse 5 soys. from stakes ; one mile. Mr C. Fitzherbert's Kalmia, 7st (C. Jenkins) 1 Mr L. F. Holmes' King Harry, 7stßlb (J. Hall) 2 Mr E. Jackmau's King John, 7st (F. Kiugan) 3 Also started— Johnny Faa, Prairie Grass, Prestige, aud Pihanga. From a splendid start Prestige assumed the lead, and held that position to the back of the courso, with Johnny Faa close up. Coming into the straight the placed horses took up the running, with King John slightly in front coming round the bend. As the straight was entered Kalmia, amidst cheers from the grand stand, galloped into the lead and won without an effort by two lengths ; the third horse close up. Totalisator, £333; on the winner, £85. Dividend, £3 10s. Time, lniin. 48 l-ssec. First Handicap Hack Flying, of 30 soys.; five furlongs. * Mr A. Cameron's Gunboat, 7stßlb (C. Jenkins) 1 Mr W. Louagan's Trickery, 7st 111 b (Schaffer) 2 Dr T. Bennett's Besant, 7st 41b (G. Reid) 3 Also started— Princess Cole, Mirarna, Voltaire, Ascot Yale, Roll Call, Countess, Taugaroa, Curio, Bloomsbury, Bush Boy, Snapcap, Cumfort, Tonganui, Ruby Twist, Moata, Rakipoai. With a field of nineteen Mr Wood had his work " cut out " to give them p, fair start with a course barely wide enough tp hold such a number in a lino. However, he made the best of the position, and after a nutter the race ended as above. Gunboat was second to last getting away and finished about a leugth in front, Trickery, Besant, aud Snapcap being well together. Totalisator, £629 ; on tho winner, £95. Dividend, £v 19s. Time, linin. 9 l-ssec.
