V.A.T.C. MEETING. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melbourne, October 13. There was beautiful weather for the first day's racing of the V.A.T.C. Meeting, and there was a good attendance, quite up to previous years. Carnage, a three-parts brother to Carbine, was a perfect picture for the Caulfield Stakes, but his stone penalty evidently anchored him. Loyalty, another who was favored a good deal did not start, although at Flemington in the morning he put up a sensational at 11 furlongs, and the son of St. George is evidently returning to his 3-year-old form. Mr S. Cook, the owner of The Harvester, did not back his colt for much. The start for the Guineas was wretched, and Turney, the rider of Atlas, one of the contestants, was ordered to stand down for a month for disobedience at the post. Mr Gollan's horse, Norton, did not start in the Steeplechase. The following are the results : — Caulfield Stakes — The Harvester 1, Malachite 2, Eureka 3. Other starters — Lord Randolph, Tarcoola, Fortunatus, Port Admiral, Carnage (13lb penalty), Hova, Krongberg, Jonathan, Nightingale, Lady Trenton, Paris, Pilot Boy, Forward and Nobleman. The betting was 4 to 1 against Nobleman, 5 to 1 Fortunatus and Paris, and 15 to 1 The Harvester. On the fall of the flag the favourite went to tho front, but on entering the straight The Harvester took charge and the result was never in doubt, Mr Cook's horse winning by a length. Hurdle Handicap— Ebor 1, Woorayl 2, Campaspe 3. Nine horses started. Betting— 3 to 1 against Ebor, 7 to 1 Goldreef and Woorayl. The favourite won by six lengths. Caulfield Guineas— Cobbity 1, Marusa 2, Dreamland 3. Other starters- Bonnie Scotland, Question, Moorite, The Enchanter, Dryden, Preston, Destiny, Atlas and Chesterman. Betting — 3 to 1 against Dreamland and Moorite, 6 to 1 Cobbity. Cobbity won by two lengths, Bonnie Scotland was fourth. First Steeplechase -King Louis 1, Leo 2, Password 3. Won from start to finish. Debutante Stakes Challenger 1, Killie 2, Hova 3. Eighteen started. Won by two lengths. Toorak Handicap - Devon 1, Solanum 2, Bruin 3. Thirty-three started. Won by three lengths.
