A Deep-Sea Curiosity.
A deep-sea curiosi'y is the t nli fish. This strange creature, witli »-i angular jaws, filled with lonar si" ■ teeth, a cartridge-shaped tonjrue ■• a body not unlike a dilapidated old shoe in shape, ha« upon the tip ot its nose a slender stem bearing an eggshaped object tbat may be illuminat -a at the owner's pleasure, and put out when he so pleases. The lantern does not serve as a »vide to his wanderings, but is used as a trap to entice unwary and innocent food fishes, When Linophryrie Lucifer is hungry he lights his lamp, which is merely a phosphorescent lip to the egg shaped body, opens his mouth, and waves before it a slender, cork-like appendage that grows beneath the lowfT jaw. The small fish mistake the light for a phosphorescent insect, and in their sera nble for the daintj, they sail into the capacious mouth that stands open to receive them. When he has dined to his satisfaction he turns off his light, and goes about his business.
