HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
The House met at 2.30. The second reading of the Land Km» provement and Native Land Acquisition ' Bill was debated throughout the after* noon. The Bill provides for eipendi* ture £250,000 this year in, the purchase of native lands, and of another £360,000 in reading and opening up Crown lands for settlement purposes. Mr Mitchelsbn and the Oppoaltion members expressed their approval of the principle of the Bill* . Sir Robert Stout opposed the Billon • the ground that it was another borrowins scheme. , l . Mr Seddon said the people were leav* ing the colony, and Government must adopt a bold course and stop the exodus. The House rose at 5.80. The House resumed at 7.80. The debate on thia second t reading of the Lands Improvement and Native Lands Acquisition Bill was continued until after midnight, when Mr O'Began moved as an amendment that the Bifl be referred' back to the Government for the purpose of introducing fhctprh> tipal of betterment into.it. , After further debate th^e amendment was lost on the voices, the 2nd reading was carried by 42 to 7. :i -^" The House rose at 2 a.m. .
