(Per Press Association.) I'hristchcbch, July 31. At the Magistrate's Court this morning R. 0. Wurue. a fishmonger, was charged with baying in his possession 317 cigars on which duty had not been paid. Accused admitted tho offence and was fined £50 with £4 cost John Ashton publican of Lyttelton. similarly charged, was fined £25 and costs £3 10s. The cigars in both cases were forfeited. Dunbdin, July 31. The Finance Committee of the City Council, haying received the report of the actuary on Mr Fish'e conversion ftcheme, will recommend its adoption, and the pro paration of a bill to give effect to it by issuing 4} per cent, debentures. It will be proposed that the cash value where extended depentures are taken instead of money shall be invested to pay the interest on a future loan for the completion of the drainage scheme. Auckland. July 31. At the conference of representatives of the Operative Bootmakers, held to-night, delegate* were appointed to request a conference with the employers in reference to boy labour, which it is stated, in some places is almost supplanting the men. It is understood that some of the manufacturers admit the evil, and are agreeable to have the conference take remedial measures to prevent cutting competition going on. Hastings, June 31. So far there are no tidings of the musing man Mark Mitchell, who is supposed to be drowned.
