Important Deputation to Minister of Lands.
KIMBOLTON ROAD AND OTHER MATTERS. Yesterday Messrs Stevens and Pirani introduced to the Minister of Lands a deputation consisting of Mr Homer, member of the Kiwitea County Council, and Messrs A. Fergusson and Lowes, Birmingham. The deputation explained that Mr Reid, chairman of the County Council, would have gone down with the deputation, but for the fact that he was unwell. They complained of the condition of the Kimbolton road between Birmingham and Pemberton and between Birmingham aad Apiti. It was pointed out that of the £300 arranged to be spent on the road, only about £200 had been spent, and that the worst place, a short distance from Birmingham, had been left untouched* The road was the chief means of communication with the State farm at Pemberton and with the Apiti district. The road at present was quite impassable for wheeled traffic. The deputation explained that L 250 would do what was needed for ■ the winter, and the Minister acknow- i ledged the necessity of assistance being rendered to the settlers in this matter, and promised to see Mr Barron, of the Lands Department, to ascertain if something could not be done at once in the matter. The deputation asked if any decision had been arrived at in regard to the bridge across the Qroua river near Apiti. The Minister said it would be considered with the Public Works Estimates, but he could give no promises until he saw how the House dealt with the proposals in the Financial Statement. ; The deputation also urged upon the Minister the appointment of a public vaccinator and Registrar of Births, ; Marriages and Deaths at Birmingham. He asked Mr J. Stevens, M.H.R., to go with him to the Under-Secretary to consider the question. The reception accorded the deputation by the Minister led them to believe their requests would be granted. Messrs Stevens and Pirani, M's.H.R., rendered valuable assistance. The deputation were highly pleased with the courtesy extended to them by the Minister of Lands, and the patient manner in which he went into the details.
