He said he went outnde the counter to weigh the gold, there being no customer! id the bank then ; that he pushed the bag across the counter to the other side, and in going round himself stopped to talk to another officer and forgot all about the bag of gold .-never thought about it till he missed it next day T A fortnight later he confessed that he took the money, but could not tell what had become of it; he had not jot it. He said that he had no accom plice, but that innocent people might ■offer if he told what had become of the money, and pleaded for mercy, for hi* mother's »ake He said his relatives would find the money In the interval he gave the manager a list of his debts, .. amounting to about .£l4O.
