The poll j will be hold on Saturday, the 21st inst. An unprovoked assault was committed by an unknown culprit last night on Mr and Mrs Denny, of the Club Hotel, Palmerston North. It appears that Mr j Denny had cause to speak to the offender ( for treading on a dog while passing through the hotel. No sooner had the rebuke passed Mr Denny's lips thuu he received a knock down blow. Mrs Denny who had come to her husband's assistance, was also thrown down. Proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded by Cr Masters, That Cr Wilson's action iv calling tenders for clearing the Halcombe-Feildiug road be approved of. —Carried. The tenders for clearing ou the Halcombe-Feildiiigroad were opened, that of R. Dafter and Dick, for Is 9d a chain, being accepted.

Captain Edwin wired at 1.35 p.m. today :— Strong west to south and southeast winds, with rain and much colder weather, after 12 hours from now ; gfass rise. At a meeting in the Wesleyan Church last evening it was decided to abandon the proposal to secure a different site to that on which the old church is erected for the new building. The present churcli will be shifted back and the new one erected in its place. The entries of sheep and cattle at Mr C. Carr's sale this afternoon were very large, and the attendance good. As Mr Carr was suffering from a severe cold, Mr Matthew Henry, of Palmerston North, conducted the sale. A report of the prices realised will appear tomorrow. Daniels has just finished building a very nice house at Beaconsfield. Mr Levetfc. who is now on his return trip from England, whence he brings a partner to share his joys and sorrows, left the matter of building a house for him in the hands of Mr Daniels, who furnished the plans aud specifications. The bouse consists of nine rooms, the whole of which are tastefully and conveniently finished. The verandah in front, which extends about four feet each end, gives a very nice finish to the building. The house is built on a beautiful piece of level land on the banks of the Kiwitea stream, having the frontage on Mackay's line. The meeting" of the Feilding Mutual Improvement Society, held iv the Primitive Methodist Church last evening, was well attended, aud the members showed a lively interest in the proceedings. The newly-elected president, Mr J. Gould, occupied the chair. The rules for the guidance of the society haviug been adopted, several musical items were rendered. Quartettes were nicely given by Misses Blacknioro aud Cart}' and Messrs Attwood and Carty. songs by Messrs Judkin and Cartj;. a»d readings by Messrs Johustoue and A. Shearer. Altogether a most pleasurable aud instructive eveniug was spent, and thero is every prospect of t'le society flourishing. Mr A. Carty was elected secretary.
