Frozen Meat Trade.
Messrs Nelson Bros. Frozen Meat report, dated sth October, remarks : New Zealand Mutton— An advance of &d to \i per lb was made in this article, but it Las been difficult to maintain, in face of the large numbers of Dutch and German sheep forced on the market, which had to be cleared and extremely low prices taken. A great quantity of damaged New Zealand sheep have tended to a further depression in prices, and this has been added to by owners wishing to clear their stocks accepting 3Jd to 3|d for every good bright fresh Dunedin sheep in good condition and selling sizes ; nice sizeable South ! Canterbury sheep have also been quitted at the same low figure. New Zealand Lamb — The stock at last seems to be coming to an end, a season that has lasted for nearly two months beyond what has usually been looked on as its term, has been continued by the determination of holders to clear at prices considerably less than the lambs cost in New Zealand rather than hold over till next season. It has truly been a bad year for importers, and whether such an excessive export will prove advantageous to New Zealand farmers, especially in Canterbury where the great increase has taken place, remains to be seen. Australian Pork — A small consignment of 98 sides came to hand in the Rome ; it was well-bred, nice looking meat, well butchered, clean and bright, but too large for Home tastes as they now are, fat bacon is not in demand it was formerly, and the only pork that would have a chance of realising a really remunerative price should weigh from 64lbs to 80lbs the carcase, not over.
