Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
A meeting convened by the thrpp resi dent clergymen in Feilding, wns held ir the Foresters' Hall, yestr-rd.-iy evening for the purpose of forming v branch o the above society. The Mayor was voted to tin; chair, anc in a few words alluded to tho need then was for tho operations of such h society in this town. Tho chairman then cnllec upon the Rev H. M. Murray to address those present Mr Murray said he wns certain tha: everyone was convinced of iho necessity which existed tor the operations of « society of this kind. Single, individual! often found it difficult to \.\kv action hence the formation of those societies which took up any cases brought before their notice. Many instance.-* of cruelty to dumb animals often uros>; from ignor ance, and seeing the necessity of souh movement being taken, the three minis tern in Feilding had decided to take th< imtiatorv steps in this mutter. No society was more worthy of their support, anc where cases of cruelty nrosp, the police were bound to take action. Dumt animals were recognized hv the law as requiring protection, and this t'nct conic; not be too strongly impressed on tht public. The secretary of this society ir Wellington had written to him (the speaker) and had promised a subscription The reverend gentleman thru read letter; of apology from Mr C. A. Levett and Di Monckton who were unabh; to attend but promised to render nil the assistance in their power. Mr Arnott asked several questions which were answered by Mr Murray tc the satisfaction of the meeting. The Rev Innes Jones proposed, am 3 Mr Shearer seconded, That, a branch o the society be formed in Foilding.— Car ried. Mr Reade consented to net as secretary pro tern. Mr Richardson stated that he # hac acted as local representative of tin Wellington branch for some years, durinjj wtiicft time Imnareils or complaints tint been made to him, but when evidence was wanted, people generally declined U come forward. He thought an Inspectoi should be appointed under tho Act. H< felt assured that Father Patterson woulc aid them in this work, which needed as sistance from every poet. Mr Shearer proposed, and Mr Reads seconded, That tho Revs Murray, Inne; Jones, and Clement, nml Messrs lleatle Richardson, and the Mayor, form a committee to draw up rules. — Carried The Revs Murray, lones Fonts, Cle ment. the Mayor, and Messrs Reado Shearer, Richardson, and J. C. Hill wen appointed a committee to canvass fot members at an annual subscription of ">s and to report at a further meeting to hi held this day fortnight. The Mayor proposed, and Mr Shearei seconded, That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the three reverend gentle men for the steps which they had taker in this matter. — Carried. A vote of thanks to the chairman closet the proceedings.
